How to Peel Garlic

This is a short post, but a good one. How do you peel garlic? Many people don't... they buy it pre-peeled because they don't want to waste their time on it. A few know to put a broad knife over a clove, give it a slight smack to loosen the paper-like wrapping, and then peel. In fact, that's how I did it for years. Then I learn this neat-o method.

Step 1. Break apart cloves in a head of garlic and put them in a bowl.

Step 2. Cover the bowl and shake the daylights out of it.

Step 3. Open the bowl to reveal all your garlic cloves have been peeled! Put the peeled cloves in the fridge to store.

I know... right?!?! Why is this not common knowledge?

  1. This technique only breaks the cloves apart. They are still individually sheathed in their skins. You are only getting rid of some of the paper but you cannot totally peel garlic this way. (and you know it)

  2. I'm sorry you found the technique disappointing. I do have to say though, I actually peel garlic this way, so it does work for me. I blog about the things I actually do... I try an mention if something is new to me, otherwise these are things I do in my daily life. ..And if something proves less than satisfactory (e.g.. my deer soap), I try to mention that. (In other words I try to report negative results.) Did you notice I break the cloves apart before putting them in the bowl? The skins do come off, but you have to shake quite a while. there might be a few pieces of skin left on a few cloves, but I find that to be the exception not the rule. Also, a larger bowl is generally better, the small one is what I had handy at the time and it took longer to work. Sorry, that you didn't find this helpful.
